Is Wi-Fi 6 different from 802.11ax?
No, they are the same thing. The Wi-Fi Alliance started a campaign to coin the term “Wi-Fi 6” when referring to the IEEE 802.11ax standard. It indicates that it is the sixth generation of Wi-Fi. The premise was to simplify the marketing message to help 802.11ax be better positioned relative to the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standards used in cellular (such as 5G).
What are the benefits of Wi-Fi 6?
- Wi-Fi 6 can reach speeds of up to 9.6 Gbps, significantly faster than speeds of 3.5 Gbps on Wi-Fi 5. This means more potential speed for each device.
- Wi-Fi 6 has an enhanced multi-user feature called Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) that allows multiple devices with varying bandwidth needs to be served simultaneously. Under the Wi-Fi 5 generation, such devices would have had to compete to send data.
- The battery life of devices are improved by a feature called Target Wake Time (TWT). This allows devices to plan out communications with a router; meaning that they can remain inactive until required and prolong their battery life.
- With a new security protocol called WPA3, Wi-Fi 6 makes it harder for cyber criminals to crack passwords through common techniques like constantly guessing them. Although you can get this feature on previous generations, it is optional whereas it is a requirement for Wi-Fi 6; guaranteeing stronger security.
